NDSEVA Senior Alumni Program
The Notre Dame Alumni Association has found that as alumni enter into the senior age bracket (over 55), for a variety of reasons, many tend to become less active in traditional alumni programs. NDSA assists alumni clubs and class leaders in developing events, activities, and programs of special interest to seniors, but open to all alumni and friends.
As a result, the NDSEVA Senior Alumni Program wants to:
- Engage senior alumni and friends in meaningful community service through club sponsored and class sponsored activities.
- Enhance opportunities for senior alumni and friends to reunite with long lost colleagues.
- Promote senior volunteer service that creates an awareness of the primary role our Christian faith plays in our lives.
- Provide avenues for senior alumni and friends to effect positive change within their communities.
- Enable senior alumni and friends to utilize their talents, skills and education to enhance the lives of others.
- Encourage senior alumni and friends to engage in the six Cs of Alumni Association program development:
- Camaraderie
- Community Service
- Continuing Education
- Catholic/Christian spirituality
- Current student support
- Communication
- Respond to the growing population of senior alumni and friends to assure adequate representation within the Alumni Association and active participation in future alumni programming.
- Continue to develop programs that remain responsive to the changing needs of the senior population.
Programs
In order to foster our Goals and Objectives above, we’d like to address as well as we can programs that are realistic and accomplishable. NDSEVA Senior Alumni programs in support of the ND Senior Alumni include:
- “Bat for the Cure”: Prostate Awareness Cancer Education (PACE) booth at the Norfolk Tides- look for details as to our date for 2009’s season
- Hospital Ministry Program: Dr. Pat O’Connell offers his help to any Notre Dame family member in our area finding themselves in need of guidance on an emergency.
- God, Country, Notre Dame: Mike Carlson annually hosts a Navy ND ROTC Midshipmen barbeque with our students doing their orientation tour. Many of our Navy and former Navy members join in to offer advice on their experiences as these students determine their career path within the Navy.
These are programs that are established or at least in the formative stages. Some other NDSA programs could include:
- Tax Assistance Program (TAP) for people who need simple tax assistance
- Corporate Volunteer Program
- Student Career Mentoring Program—offering help to local ND students as they progress from student to worker.
If you have ideas about how to implement these ideas, or have additional ideas that could assist us in activities of benefit to our SA goals, please contact our SA coordinator!
Senior Alumni News
We had a great time hosting the ND Region 12 Senior Alumni meeting in May. In addition to getting the latest information from the University and its Senior Alumni programs, we enjoyed several social events, a tour of the USS GEORGE H W BUSH (CVN 77) and joining in the Norfolk and NATO's Azalea Festival "taste of NATO" and Tattoo.
