About Us
Tracing our roots to 1985, BA of ND was officially founded as a committee of the Alumni Association in 1989. Our mission is to enhance the presence and experiences of blacks across the Notre Dame family. Former University President, Father Theodore Hesburgh, invited 25 Black alumni to a meeting to develop a strategy to assist the University in the recruitment and retention of Black students. One of the outcomes of this meeting was the recommendation that the Alumni Association formalize a sub-committee of Black alumni to assist the University in:
- increasing the Black student enrollment.
- enhancing support systems for current student Blacks
- significantly increasing the number of Blacks on the teaching/research faculty and administration
Regionally, Black Alumni of ND attempt to assist local clubs in establishing effective methods for attracting and retaining minority students. This is accomplished by attending College Fairs, visiting high schools with large percentages of minority students and low representation at ND and by assisting local groups in developing relationships with the principals of these high schools.
BA of ND is also proud of having served as the template for the establishment and organization of the Hispanic Alumni of Notre Dame and the Asian-Pacific Alumni of Notre Dame.
We are ND!
